Precise Control of the Radio Telescope at the Piwnice Astronomical Observatory

The Piwnice Astronomical Observatory near Toruń is a unique landmark on the map of Polish science. A key element of the observatory is its radio telescope, whose precise movement and receiver systems are among the world’s best. This success would not have been possible without the commitment of Polish technological expertise, especially from ANIRO, which designed and implemented modern control systems that enable the telescope to operate reliably 24 hours a day, year-round.

A Key Project for Polish Radio Astronomy

The radio telescope in Piwnice has been used for cosmic observations since the 1990s, and its unique design allows for collaboration with the largest global facilities as part of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). This enables the facility to conduct complex observations by accurately comparing radio signals from various corners of the Universe.

The designers of the drive systems and controllers responsible for operating the telescope have enabled its positioning with an accuracy that allows for capturing phenomena billions of light-years away. The innovation of the implemented solutions, such as inverters and backlash-free gearboxes, which minimize vibrations and eliminate undesirable movements, ensures the reliability of the systems, as confirmed by decades of trouble-free operation.

ANIRO Technology at the Observatory

Not only was the equipment provided—ANIRO is also a technology partner of the scientists from Toruń. The drive systems with advanced servo control allow for the precise positioning of the large radio telescope antenna. Each movement of the telescope, both in the elevation and azimuth axes, is supported by an independent drive designed for durability in all weather conditions.

Thanks to constant technical support, the telescope is able to operate without downtime—essential for conducting complex radio astronomical observations. Even the cooling systems, operating around the clock throughout the year, are supported by highly durable technologies that minimize equipment downtime..

Breakthrough Applications in Astronomy

The radio telescope installed in Piwnice is not only a symbol of Polish radio astronomy but also an advanced device that enables the study of cosmic mysteries, such as Fast Radio Bursts (FRB). Thanks to the technology, the telescope operates across a wide frequency range, allowing for detailed studies of phenomena such as FRBs, which provide valuable scientific data about the cosmos. Modern drives and cooling systems ensure continuity of operation and signal stability, which are essential for precise measurements.

The Future of the Observatory and Collaboration with ANIRO

The observatory in Piwnice is continuously evolving to meet the changing needs of science. The introduction of new solutions, such as remote telescope control and the latest drive control algorithms, allows for increasingly precise observations. Experts from ANIRO continuously collaborate with astronomers in Toruń, ensuring that every component of the telescope operates at the highest level.

ANIRO as a Partner of Polish Science

ANIRO places a strong emphasis on innovation and collaboration with science, reflecting its commitment to the development of technologies that support astronomy. Thanks to their contributions, the Astronomical Observatory in Piwnice serves as a key research center in Poland, proving that Polish technology and science can achieve groundbreaking results together.
